With the launch of their debut album Departure, the bright and sunny vibes of Sydney-based electro duo ABROAD are just the antidote to this shocking weather. Here are five pieces of art they want you to check out right now…
FLIGHT FACILITIES – Down to Earth
This came out a couple of years before Jack and I started ABROAD and it’s still so influential today. These guys managed to capture an energy and sound that feels timeless. When we first started ABROAD, I was looking for albums to reference. Electronic music was completely new to us and this absolutely helped guide the way.
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – Transatlanticism
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE were a huge part of my teenage years and in particular, this album. I’ve always loved the guitar tones from DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, and I definitely draw influence from this album when writing our guitars.
Bob Moses – Days Gone By
I remember the first time I heard Bob Moses – I was working in a small cafe in London and Tearing Me Up played on the stereo. The slow beats and keys, the smooth vocals and guitars – it was instant love. I immediately put on the whole album and loved every minute of it!
THE XX – xx
I, like my entire friend group (and maybe the world?), was enamoured with this album. There is an incredible atmosphere from the opening of Intro to the end of Stars that nearly burned a hole in my speakers. I played it so much, but I never got tired of it, even today.
GORILLAZ – Demon Days
One of the biggest draw cards with GORILLAZ is their ability to blend genres – there’s elements of grime, afro-beat, disco, electronica and 90s indie rock. While those aren’t the styles we are going for, it’s their ability to seamlessly blend them. Jack and I come from such different backgrounds, but we've drawn from that to make ABROAD what it is.
