Five Chapters in the Book of Eli
Perth-based singer-songwriter Eli Greeneyes has released a self-titled EP, and it’s good. Really good, in fact, and I’m not just saying that because he refers to someone as a “wanker” in a pop song (though that definitely helped). He took SENSE through five pieces of art he couldn’t do without.
Rick and Morty
I used to watch it every now and then when I was younger but I’ve just started the series again and I forgot how genius it was. Some episodes you have to watch at least two times to get some of the multi-layered jokes that are through it. Such an inspiring piece of art, so creative and unique from any other show, I think.
Prince – Purple Rain
This is one of the first pieces of music I heard as a child. A fucking MASTERPIECE of innovative and unique songs. The production is amazing and the creativity he had with the limited resources for that time is incredible. He’s very recently become my favourite artist again.
Skateboarding
It's been there since I was about 10. I remember I went to a local skatepark for the first time, I was watching a few people just glide and create these different lines and ways of skating the park and I found it so inspiring. I tried dropping in on the smallest ramp that day and fell on my knee, I cried I think. I was so fragile as a kid so it taught me about fear and pain pretty early on in life and it's stuck with me no matter how many times I ate shit [laughs]. I love bombing hills at the moment, I get home and feel so relaxed from getting all the fear and adrenalin out. Pushing myself in that way is so important for my confidence.
Cooking
It's another way for me to create. I love cooking in a way where I make things up as I go, it's like improvising with your taste buds as the guide. Simple Italian meals, Japanese bowls, hearty crock pots, spicy Indian. I’ve always loved it, but I’ve been especially loving it lately.
Francis Bacon – Portrait of Lucian Freud
I’ve always loved his art for how he portrays darkness but this painting in particular moves me in unexplainable ways, and it's one of the first things that made me want to paint. Music and songwriting and production have been incredible ways of expressing unexplainable feelings for me and it was that same feeling that arose from witnessing this painting for the first time.
Eli Greeneyes’ self-titled EP is out now.
