Wollongong Indie Pop Quartet Give Us Five of the Best

Blissful, smooth and effortlessly groovy, Out of My Hands is the latest single from Wollongong indie pop four-piece PIRRA. An irresistible ballad coupling vocalist Jess Black with singer-songwriter Tim Wheatley, it’s the perfect soundtrack for drinks with friends on a patio, and a strong indication that upcoming album Spirals is not to be missed. We asked PIRRA for five pieces of art they think you should check out now. Like, right now.

TOM DISSEVELT & KID BALTAN – The Fascinating World of Electronic Music

I’ve been listening to this album and it’s rather mind-bending to think they were pulling these kind of sounds in the 50s. There are so many sounds that would be at home today in modern electronica. The very early creators of electronic music seem to have seen it as a continuation of 20th century classical music. It’s fascinating to see how technology keeps changing and the directions electronic music has taken. I think their brains would have probably exploded if they were able to hear FLYING LOTUS or APHEX TWIN.

FLYING LOTUS – You’re Dead!

When I first heard this album it knocked me for six. There was nothing else I’d ever heard that was like it. It features guests such as Kendrick Lamar, Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg and Thundercat. It’s pretty intense, so probably not a dinner album.

BOOKA SHADE – Cut The Strings

We were at a party that was winding down when a friend of ours put this album on and cranked the speakers. We all got sucked right into the vortex and it turned the night around, after that we went walking in the fields ‘til the sun came up. Good night.

APHEX TWIN – Drukqs

This album has beautiful piano pieces such as Arvil 14th and then goes into intense drum and bass tracks like 54 Cymru Beats.

SHOWA 44 – Ormus

I remember seeing this album performed live in someone’s lounge room in Surry Hills about 12 years ago. The ambience resonated to every corner of the room and at one point the drummer was playing the snare with a chain, it was the wildest performance I’d ever seen, yet also the most blissful and peaceful.

Spirals is out September 30th on BLK&WHT Records.
