Five of the Best from Perth’s QUEENCY
Retro pop for the 21st century, Perth’s QUEENCY has channelled his love of Prince and Whitney Houston into the new EP Purple Diamonds. Put on your dancing shoes, because below are five pieces of art he wants you to check out right now...
QUEENCY - Purple Diamonds
Purple Diamonds is a shameless synth-heavy and vocally-stacked retro-pop track modernised to the 21st century’s flavours. It’s definitely an ode to 80s pop, but I wanted it to be seasoned to the taste of today! And I like it extra spicy. So we turned the heat all the way up! It’s also my tribute to the incredible Prince. So yeah, def check it out!
Pose (TV show)
That show really hit home. It tells the story of the ballroom scene in the early 80s and how ostracised queer communities of colour created a space where they could be their authentic selves. Vogue now has its official space in every queer community around the world, and Pose tells the story of its origins, also showing today’s LGBTQ+ people what the generation before us did and thanks to whom we have rights. There’s still a lot to be done, and I’m not even talking about the rest of the world. But what these queens did in the US, going through the AIDS pandemic, paved the way for gay rights everywhere in the world.
Samuel Barber – Adagio for strings, Op. 11
The power of strings … The first time I heard Adagio, I questioned my existence. This piece is so tender, yet so intense. I was not the same after listening to it. It made me feel all the emotions. The climax is extremely powerful, and the rest of the piece will haunt you hours after you've listened to it. A true chef d’oeuvre.
The Bodyguard Original Soundtrack Album
The movie was truly average as far as movie plots go… (And I mean, every Kevin Costner movie ever made, am I right?) BUT THE SOUNDTRACK FAM!! Sincerely iconic. My favourite song ever is I Have Nothing and Whitney delivered it as effortlessly live as she did on the record. Despite being fairly average, the movie was pioneering though, because Whitney was the first black lead role on the big screen with a white love interest. And she’s the first black woman to ever get the circling camera shot during the kiss scene. That album is an album you must listen to before you die.
Amélie
You’re gonna tell me I’m biased cause I’m French. Well, you’re not wrong. But it’s a beautiful movie, and Audrey Tautou took it home on that one. If you’d ask what is the one French movie you gotta watch before you die? Amélie. And the soundtrack is to die for too. Major recommend.
Purple Diamonds is out now.
