Mish Sharma is the vocalist for BrisVegas alt-rockers TORIZON. A blend of modern rock, emotive melodies and hard-hitting grooves, TORIZON is what happens when you cram FLYLEAF and BARONESS into a blender and garnish it with a little TONIGHT ALIVE. Buoyed by the response to their latest single Find My Way Out – not to mention raising a few eyebrows with their amazing cover of Thoughtless by KORN – Mish, Sarah, Jeremy and Aaron recently played their first post-COVID show to a sold-out crowd.

About to release their follow-up single Burning Away, Mish took us through five albums you need to hear now. Like, right now. This instant. Go!

FIONA APPLE – When the Pawn… (1999)

“This album is a portrait of raw anger and pain wrapped around catchy hooks, alternative rock/pop piano licks underpinned by jazz and funk-esque grooves. Fiona released this album at only 18/19 years of age which blows my mind! How does someone so young be this incredibly talented and honest with their music? Her first album Tidal, another dark and heavy piece of art, was released when she was just 16 years old! I think Fiona is a unique musical genius and she’s one of my biggest influences. I am drawn to music that takes you on a journey where you feel every passage in your soul – which is exactly why everyone should check this album out.”

TEXTURES – Phenotype (2016)

“TEXTURES are one of the most underrated heavy bands around. Phenotype is a journey. Each song is packed with moments and relentless power – even the softer passages and breaks are brimming with intention and purpose. As a songwriter I really appreciate how well written each track is. Bonus points for being a great album to lift weights to! I was devastated to see that they broke up because every album has been better than the last which, in my humble opinion, makes them one of the most original prog metal bands around.”

LINKIN PARK – Meteora (2003)

“Meteora was released at a crucial point in my life. I was 16 and contemplating suicide as a result of prolonged childhood trauma. When I first heard Somewhere I Belong, Easier to Run and Numb, I finally felt that somebody in the world could relate to how I was feeling. It was at this point I decided to leave my childhood home and pursue music, so one day I could create the same sense of purpose for others who may be going through a difficult time. It really has stood the test of time for me as I still listen to it almost every week!”

MACHINE HEAD – The Blackening (2007)

“This album is important to me because it is relatively “less heavy” compared to their previous releases, but it makes up for it in the songwriting aspect. Personally, this is the perfect combination of heaviness and melodies for my taste in music. The songwriting on this album is second to none in this genre. Peppered with the signature MACHINE HEAD guitar duels and pinch harmonics where each song holds its own, this is one of the most powerful expressions of heavy metal.”

EVANESCENCE – The Open Door (2006)

“Am I even a female vocalist if I don't mention at least one EVANESCENCE album? Bring Me to Life came out at a very dark period of my life. I was 16 and contemplating suicide as a result of the aforementioned childhood trauma. I remember watching the music video on MTV and it flicked a switch in my brain. It’s an odd way to explain it, but I instantly thought “THIS is how you translate the darkness inside to a tangible living, breathing thing.” Shortly after EVANESCENCE released The Open Door which really cemented my love for them. As a grown up now, I really appreciate all the sonic risks with more of a sample-based foundation, orchestral vocal layers, and staying authentic, especially coming off a platinum mainstream rock album. This is one of my all-time favourite albums because it takes you through the full spectrum of darkness. It is also empowering to see their sound evolve after the co-founder’s departure. I love the heavier numbers such as Sweet Sacrifice and Weight of the World which beautifully contrast the darker/moodier pieces such as Like You and Lithium.”
