Adelaide’s newest venue Hindley Street Music Hall hosted The Butterfly Effect on Saturday night. The band are touring nationally at the moment celebrating their first album release in 14 years. I have to add that I love that the two support acts, being CALIGULA’S HORSE and THORNHILL, both brought something different for music lovers.
A body vibrating beat welcomed Brisbane’s CALIGULA’S HORSE to the stage. Opening with ‘The Tempest’, off their latest release 2020's Rise Radiant, you would not have known that vocalist Jim Grey was unwell. Kicking illness to the side, and asking the crowd to take over if he needed help, we were treated to a smorgasbord of Caligula’s finest. Taking us back to 2015 with ‘Rust’ and the exquisite ‘Marigold’, which fed my soul, fans lent their voices while held mesmerised.
Melbourne’s THORNHILL just continue to go from strength to strength and show no signs of slowing down. Their stage presence just blows my mind, especially the way Jacob completely loses himself. Punters were treated to one of the best sets I have ever seen them play, and I’ve seen a fair few over the years! I’m sure there were quite a few patrons new to the THORNHILL experience that have now been converted. ‘Arkangel’, ‘Lily and the Moon’, ‘Casanova’, ‘View From The Sun’ and ‘The Hellfire Club’ we had a taste from both their albums – The Dead Pool and their latest release Heroine.
A deafening roar greeted THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT as they made their way onto the stage and the volume from the crowd did not waver for the entire set. Surprisingly the roof was still intact post show!
We spent the next hour enthralled as TBE not only shared with us some of the songs off the new album IV but also took us on a nostalgic journey of all our favourites. Looking around the room you see just how profound an effect this band has on people. Emotions are always visible with songs like ‘Gone’ and ‘Reach’, and I’m sure every fan has a ‘moment in time’ story to tell about them. Newer songs such as ‘Nil By Mouth’ and ‘So Tired’ pumped the crowd with its heavier sound.
Toward the end Clint thanked Hindley Street Music Hall for supplying another great venue for bands to play in, for everyone to gather, listen to great music and to feel that sense of community. I think these words summed up the night perfectly. Good tunes, good people, good vibes.
