Sydney based Electropop solo artist BOO SEEKA has just released his long awaited second album Between The Head & The Heart. In 2017 he gifted us with his debut Never Too Soon. Thankfully it’s never too late to hear music from the swooning electronics of the versatile musician. ‘Electropop’ as the genre title for BS doesn’t sit well with me; It’s dark, brooding, catchy song writing and the new album proves just that. It’s 12 songs that help cement the artist as one of Australia’s top electric song writers.
The Review
The album opener ‘Dream’ pushes the gates to the show in a relaxed but sure-fire way to hold a partner’s hand. Inspired by the sounds of IMOGEN HEAP, ‘Dream’ is scattered with electric drums and airy romance. This invites the listener to a well rounded album. Grab your headphones. Turn up the bass. Kick-ons are sorted.
Track 2 ‘I Like It Like’ really solidifies the musicianship of the writer. Thumping tempos, drums, radio static vocal guests and main melodies keep the listener hooked. It’s the perfect second song of an album.
‘Real’ keeps the albums pulsing rhythm. It’s the kind of song I want to hear at the very beginning and the very end of the night. Perfect for both heading into a club and as I come out from the dance floor to the morning light.
The same can be echoed with the next track ‘Next to me’. The song can be said to reminisce the the sounds of RUFUS DU SOL. Being both key players in the Electric Australian music landscape, it’s fair to say they can easily play off each other.
My next favourite from the album is ‘Paralyzed’. I’m not exactly a morning person but this song makes me feel like I’m going on a morning run. Contradictory to its title the music will have you up and going.
‘Nothing’ does the opposite of the title with its immediate pulse. The tracks escalating chorus really flows the listener into a singing catchiness.
If you remember what I’d said earlier about one song opening the night and then also closing it? Songs like ‘Superstar’, ‘Finish What You Started’, ‘Break the Line’, and ‘Stop Me Now’ fill those gaps. Filling the evening with consistent, brooding enjoyment.
The second last song ‘Happen’ recalls my recognition to IMOGEN HEAP and RUFUS DU SOL. It’s a building and, somewhat heavier energy than the rest of the album and a way that you want an album to start to leave - if it has to.
The record’s closing track ‘Let Me in’, does it with romantic acoustic guitar which opens the song and separates the song from the others. The finishing track is just the finishing touch needed. It feels like a lovely, warm hug when you’re crying. A truly sad song, but a truly beautiful one.
The Verdict
Between The Head & The Heart is the Sophomore record that most artists look to or wish they could produce. It’s dark, dancy, melodic and most of all - really good. It further solidifies BOO SEEKA as a one of Australia's leading Indie-Electric songwriters. I fearlessly speak for everyone when I say, please don’t let it be another 5 years between albums, Boo.
