The Long Awaited Return to the National Circuit

Symbolically and historically, the number four has come to signify things that are solid and whole; a fact entirely befitting of legendary Australian rockers THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT and the announcement today of their fourth studio album, aptly titled: IV.

Following earlier snippets of new material via recent singles Nil By Mouth and So Tired, it’s entirely clear that time has only galvanized the original and reformed lineup of Ben Hall, Clint Boge, Glenn Esmond and Kurt Goedhart, aka THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT; and the confirmation of the new full-length IV, due out later this year, is also accompanied today with news that the band will also be hitting the road to celebrate the impending new album with a ten-date national tour alongside fellow Aussie heavies THORNHILL and CALIGULA’S HORSE.

With a run of 2022 performances already under their belts, including two headline shows and an appearance at Wallapalooza festival, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT’s impending tour celebrating IV will kick off in Cairns at Tanks Art Centre on September 30, before continuing on to Townsville, Mackay, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide and closing out in Fremantle at Metropolis on October 16.

Set to christen a brand new album on the road for the first time in over a decade, which draws inspiration from the likes of FAITH NO MORE, DEFTONES, JEFF BUCKLEY and GOJIRAto name a mere few, the impending IV tour is set to gift unforgettable moments for both fans and THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT themselves, as Clint concludes ,

I've forgotten what it's like to take a whole album’s worth of new songs on the road, it's going to be fun to see what works out there. One thing I really love and am really excited about is hearing how the songs change, morph and evolve on tour”. And the excitement to hit the road is palpable, with Ben sharing, “This could quite possibly be the most excited I've been to hit the road in our career. With THORNHILL & CALIGULA’S HORSE joining us it’s going to be a great tour!”

The storied adventure for The Butterfly Effect since first emerging at the turn of the millennium has been one lined with extensive touring, both at home and abroad, critically-acclaimed releases and an established reputation as one of the all-time Australian alternative greats. Armed with their debut self-titled EP back in 2001, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT swiftly hit the road and found themselves named as triple j’s Unsigned Find of 2002. Not long after, a debut full-length Begins Here staunchly launched a fan and industry frenzy, with the album debuting at number 24 on the ARIA Albums charts, topping the independent charts and ricchocheting the group into a whirlwind European tour. Fast-forwarding to 2006, the group’s sophomore album Imago debuted at number 2 on the ARIA Albums charts; the very same year that both Begins Here and Imago would be certified gold in Australia, with Imago achieving its status in a mere eight weeks. A third album, 2008’s Final Conversation of Kings, would continue the band’s certified gold streak, debuting at number 3 and revealing a more progressive sonic tinge compared to the band’s heavier beginnings.

Having performed multiple times at the Big Day Out and extensively in Australia and Europe since their inception, all signs pointed to continued world domination for THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT following the release of Final Conversation of Kings; however, plans for a fourth studio album came to a halt in 2012 with the announcement of Boge’s departure from the group, and the band ultimately disbanding altogether in 2016. But, as firmly showcased in 2017, absence can indeed make the heart grow fonder, and the announcement of the original lineup reunion for THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT saw the group completely sell out a national headline tour in March 2018; a key fact that helped contribute not only to even more confirmed live shows from the band, but also ultimately to this brand new album IV, as Clint reveals,

“It was definitely the success of our reformation tour in 2018 and the way we've been getting along generally since then (better than ever) that inspired us to get back in the studio, it seemed like a very natural progression to write and record a new album. We had so many demos and songs left over after Final Conversation of Kings so it would have been a waste not to do something with them. We've got a few songs left over that didn't make this album so you never know – there maybe another album just for fun!.” Echoing Clint’s sentiments, Kurt continues, “The energy from the crowd on our return to the live scene after a 6 year hiatus in 2018 was undeniable. It certainly left us in no doubt we had to pursue new music. Since that tour, anytime we have had spare has been spent in a rehearsal room writing new material – or a recording studio!”

IV is set for release in late 2022.

With both new songs and old favourites guaranteed to grace the setlist for THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT’s impending album shows later this year, as well as the quartet’s established history for swiftly selling out their tours, definitely don’t delay grabbing tickets to witness the exhilarating next chapter for one of Australia’s most exciting and beloved bands. And as to what fans can ultimately expect from the IV tour? Kurt concludes, “These shows will be a refined energetic hard rock band playing a swag of ripper new tunes with an energy and force not witnessed on Australian shores since ACDC”.
