Five of the Best from GEORGIA FIELDS.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Georgia Fields has released the second single from her upcoming album Hiraeth. Holding My Hands Out is an art-pop kaleidoscope with a suitably vivid video, and its release seemed like a perfectly good excuse for SENSE to get in touch and find out what five pieces of art Georgia thinks you should check out.

Peggy Frew – Islands

Peggy is an Australian author (and also the bass player in ARIA-award winning band ART OF FIGHTING). Her third novel Islands is a gritty and glorious and ultimately beautiful masterclass in storytelling. As a teenager, June’s younger sister goes missing, and this tragedy forms the backdrop of the novel. Weaving together multiple perspectives across multiple timelines and never dropping a thread, Peggy creates a stunning coming-of-age meditation on grief, intergenerational trauma, and healing. This book partly inspired my recent single, Holding My Hands Out.

PHIA – The Path

PHIA’s new self-titled album has just been released and it is a true gem – brimming with infectious melodies, quirky synths, dreamy guitars (contributed by her long-time collaborator, Joshua Teicher) and featuring 50-piece choir Melbourne Indie Voices. To accompany her single The Path, PHIA collaborated with Sabotage Distance on an epic dance video. It’s visceral, dreamy, emotional, and stunning to watch.

Winter at Westbeth

In this feature documentary, filmmaker and storyteller Rohan Spong travels to New York City to follow three residents of Westbeth for a year. In the 1970s, the city opened the ‘Westbeth apartment block as affordable, rent-controlled living for artists. Swathes of dancers, writers, musicians, photographers, and puppeteers moved in … and some didn’t leave. They are now in their 70s, 80, and 90s, and making the most compelling and powerful works of their career. Rohan’s documentary offers a tender and piercing insight into creativity, ageing, and “life imitating art”.

Lily Mae Martin

Lily Mae Martin is an exquisite visual artist born in Melbourne, working in pencil and pen drawings as well as watercolour and oil painting. She frequently depicts the female form, and her intricate and detailed drawings (characterised by delicate cross-hatching with fine pen) are absolutely breathtaking to see in real life. Morning Sun is one of my favourites, as is Beloved. She is represented by Scott Livesey Galleries. Her work has been exhibited there, and it can also be viewed on her website.

FEIST – Metals

From the gritty and ethereal soundscape, to the postcard-perfect pop songcraft, FEIST’s Metals is an understated tour-de-force in artful, gut-wrenching beauty.

Georgia Fields plays Wesley Anne in Northcote on Sunday the 10th of July. Hiraeth is out November.
